I was born and raised in western Pennsylvania. Shortly after graduating high school, I joined the US Air Force in 1966 and have been in the western United States ever since. I was discharged in 1970. I later served in the California National Guard for six years in the 1980s.
My BA and MA degrees are in Geography, obtained during separate spells at the University of California- Santa Barbara (UCSB). I also completed a year-long teaching credential course there in the Graduate School of Education.
I’ve had a varied work experience. I played music in night club bands at various locations between 1963 and 1992. In the 1970’s, I drove a taxi cab for five years, worked as a technical librarian for a small research firm, and I worked as a draftsman at a small engineering firm in Porterville, California.
In 1979, I accepted a position with the US Forest Service in Yreka, California. I worked in that position for 12 years, including while returning to UCSB for my Master’s degree. In 1992 I accepted a position as a cartographer with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in Sacramento, CA. I also taught part time at American River College, in the Geographic Information Systems certificate program from 1998 to 2007. Currently I work as a contractor for the BLM in Sacramento doing computer programming and geographic database design and development.
I still play the guitar as a hobby.
