After raising a family in a rural setting in Appalachia, and before moving to California, I worked on a degree and spent several years teaching there, serving briefly in an interim capacity as an elementary school administrator.
Life experiences and recent changes have led me to have some concern about how youngsters are taught, and especially how they learn (or don’t) such subjects as music, social studies and science.
On the personal level, I’ve always relished nature, especially in mountain areas, and used to be a serious backpacker. Late in years now, but despite infirmities that now somewhat limit my outdoor pastimes due to mobility, I still manage some hiking in fairly level areas and do some easy gardening. In winter, I remain an avid reader, NPR (“Science Friday,” “To the Best of Our Knowledge,” etc.) listener and enjoy both classical and country music.
